Charles' Final Video Art Project - Trailer
Hey guys I have been asked by several people if they could see what I have been working on for my final project, but I said no because I didn't want to show the unfinished peice, especially since this one means so much to me. This project has been really hard to put together, but I didn't want to seem like I was being mean so I put together a trailer for those of you who asked and anyone else who might be interested in seeing it could have a peak at it. I hope you enjoy it!

Hello All...
Please take some time to comment on your peers work from the projection event. Thanks to all who trekked around in the cold to see the work. It was a very exciting event to see the video moving from the 'white cube' into other environments!! Great work!
The images I took are quick snaps, but they should give you a visual reminder of the work that was associated with each person.
Have a great break!

World Of Color
I am a HUGE fan of everything Disney and an even bigger fans of amusement parks. So I usually keep tabs on whats happening at Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California. This summer at Disneyland at their sister park California Adventure they debuted "World of Color" a nighttime spectacular. Now I know most of what were looking at now has video projected onto structures, walls and figures. But this is pretty sweet too. They combine, video, water, laser lights and fireworks to make one hell of a nighttime event. Take a look.

I don't know why it was saving some portions of the video oddly when exported to Quicktime. I shared this straight from FCP to YouTube and it's better, even though it snipped the ending a little short.

Example of Social Critique (Colleen)
Hey guys found this video artist when I was attempting to write a paper for another class. Max Almy does a lot of work about technology and its influence on people. This particular piece is a satire of political television and delves into the processes behind political image making and the marketing of a candidate. Thought it tied in well with the election today as well as reading.

Social Critique Examples (Nick)
Per usual, my frequent breaks from homework took me to YouTube. I love watching old Mad TV and SNL skits, and two that I watched recently could fit into our fifth assignment as critiques of society, though at the more lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek end:

Bright Color Plastic Cows (posted by Ramiro Trejo)
I remember when I was around 10 years old back in Chicago my class and I went around downtown to see all the different kinds of sculpture cows that had become so famous. Personally, I was a fan of those cows, probably because I was a kid and a cow colored in bright patterns was always funny and interesting to me. Heres a clip from the show 60 Minutes with a critique on modern art concerning modern sculptures.

Early vid artist response
Version I showed in class, not the later, more edited one. For Sheilah to Grade.
To Soothe A Frightened Girl /My Low-Fi Music
Here are some songs that I wrote. I usually videotaped the demo when I was writing the song, that's where a lot of those videos are from. And after a while I really started to make videos for the songs with my Sony T2 (Just a point-and-shoot camera which can do little video clips too).
They are really raw.
Some songs had appeared on the short film that I showed in class.
I just started to work on recording a not-too-low-fi version of each of the songs.
I will post the lyric later.
You can download my music here at Douban:

And my videos are all on Youku:

P.S. Dear Steph we should work on them together!

Personal Narrative - 1
This is interesting. This person conducted a different type of narrative about themselves. Rather than a narrative on their life, they conducted a narrative of their thoughts and medidations while reading a book.

The Mold
The third video assignment dealt with trying to create a personal feel using a low-fi, home movie technique. Originally I had planned on "faking" a home movie concept, and I had about fifteen minutes of fictionalized film. but all of it felt too staged and I couldn't bring myself to use it.
The only part I decided to show was a candid film that developed from one of my staged ones. I had planned on pretending to get food out of the fridge, but I was a little surprised to see that there was mold in the food, got distracted and had to stop filming. I tried again to get food out of the fridge, but was once again distracted by the mold in the second dish and had a conversation with my roommate about it and the smell and forgot about the camera.
I cannot pinpoint exactly where the fiction turned into a reality, but I know that it occurs. The viewer does not get to see or smell the mold, but can gauge how bad it is based on our reaction and how we begin to empty the fridge, and it serves to place the viewer at something that actually occurred in my life.

CArol and Ferd
The Continuing Story of Carol and Ferd by Arthur Ginsberg and Video Free America. 1972-3. There is a very short clip that is in this link and the longer version is at the library under reserve for the class.
It is worth watching more of it - the story of them is emblematic of the countercultural movement at that time. Also interesting to see them 5 years later (!) (the tapes were often shown with them present) and such is the case for the longer clip on reserve at the library.
INteresting to think about them in relation to the idea of narrative and telling personal story.
In this case they were under surveillance by a video crew for a period of a year - kind of a precursor to some of the shows that have become so popular (survivor?? etc.).

Narcissism
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJFLfHI8jUI&feature=related
YouTube's tagline is Broadcast Yourself, and that is exactly what YouTube users do without scruple or shame. YouTube provides the perfect breeding ground for narcissism because it provides a space where people can sneak a peek into the lives of others from around the world. I chose this particular video because this is a video about a woman filming herself watching another YouTube user who is watching yet another user. This online hall of mirrors leads, eventually, to a woman in Wausua, Wis, called Nornna. So this whole chain of people are watching themselves watch other people shows how intricate and complicated the web of narcissism is.

Video Diaries
The first video diary that I found was created by a group of college age guys who run a production company called wangfu. The video is around seven minutes long and they talk about going to chipotle and then subsequently about dating if it were more like chipotle. The producers assumption that this video would be interesting to an outsider and his placement of importance on the subject is inherently narcissistic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IcB0FYNCTA
The second video that I found was created by a guy that creates movies about things that have "scarred" him. For the entirety of the movie he talks about when he first started making out and how it scarred him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50zrGxHpUS8
I've come to the conclusion that video diaries and any type of video put up on youtube that the person spends the majority of the time talking about issues within his or her own life is narcissistic. I think that it is the presumption that what you have to say is important that makes it so narcissistic.

ok, i did what most of you guys probably did and typed in "narcissism" in to youtube. after surfing from video to video i came across this guy. after watching the first video i watched of him (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6KBswUOrnQ&feature=related) i thought he was just poking fun at narcissism because he was addressing his narcissism so blatantly. but after watching his other videos, i realized that this guy was in fact very narcissistic. This guy is part of this youtube group called "project awesome." Yup. every video is just him talking of nothing in particular, just him talking to the camera about nothing. the filming itself is very narcissistic, but on top of that he has to edit these nonsensical videos. Some videos do not have dialog and even less of a structure. yes these videos are funny, but i definitely think his reasoning behind these videos has to do with his need of attention and self-reassurance.

Narcissism Response by Vivian
Magibon
Margret Lilian Adams
She's Magibon, popular from two years ago. Blinking, staring at the camera, and in few clips she speaks simple Japanese word. And of course she looks cute.
People like her- she has qaint eyes and a baby face which is considered kawaii/moe (cute) in Japanese pop culture.
People hate her- nobody gets why she was doing those clips.
And they started guessing, where is she from? ect. This was such a myth.
Later the puzzle solved as Magibon revealed herself in a interview in Japan: She's a 22 year-old average American girl from Pennsylvania who loves Japanese culture. She's not talking because she is shy. (Many guesses there is something to do with her crooked teeth.)
But anyway, see how identity can easily constructed under the lens of camera.
Magibon makes me think of another myth. A lot of people have this question in minds: why do we look better when we are in the mirror. My guess is that you are actually manipulating your image in front of the mirror by :
1)adjusting the angle you see yourself
2)posing
3)correcting your pose according to the immediate feedback
when other's taking picture for you, #1's in control by the other; you can of course pose, but the feedback part's taken away. This is why people start to take pictures/ video themselves as how they see them in the mirror. Oops, not "they" but "we".
We all somehow love ourselves to some extent. Maybe not the appearance as what is in the case we talked about. There is nothing wrong.
Narcissism is sometimes too much to the people other than you. But I think it is better to love yourself than to hate yourself. It is not as painful after all.

Narcissism (Nick)
I think just about any YouTube video could be deemed narcissistic because the central motivation for uploading is attracting attention to yourself. This could even be said for those who upload television episodes, they want the attention and "thank you"s. However these two examples are a little bit stronger and more obvious.
Davey Wavey is a YouTube video blogger who talks to his fans or "blog buddies" as he calls them about his life, gay issues, and things that interest him. As he's gained a following over the past few years, he's upgraded equipment and increased the amount of editing. He even made a music video and several workout videos. Here, he discusses his nudity and neighbors.
I suppose this could be categorized as a more artful form of YouTube narcissism. This group of men rose to mainstream fame with their parody of Katy Perry's California Gurls. Here they do they same with her song Peacock.

Gabe's Narcissism Post
So this 1st video is a guy that I follow on Youtube a lot. He makes frequent vlog post. For the Youtube community to watch, comment, subscribe etc.
Here is the link ----->Would you want your leg back? Do you have abs? [ask Josh]
So people use Youtube like the website Formspring, where you have people ask questions about yourself and then you answer them. But its not just for one person to see it is for like anyone who has access to the internet to see. So in a way that makes the video very narcissistic even if they guy in this video isn't really that narcissistic himself.
Ok this second video is one of my favorites. I think its hilarious. It sort of makes fun of the people who make those stupid hair and make-up tutorials on Youtube.
Here is the link ---->How to trick people into thinking you're good looking
I think this video is less narcissistic because it is obvious that the video is making fun of the other videos on Youtube that actually try and teach people how to use make-up, do their hair, dance etc. So that makes the video very different from the one above. But at the same time, because the girl in the video is talking to the camera by herself no one else is included it makes the video still somewhat narcissistic.
What I think makes these video both somewhat narcissistic is the fact that both the people are just talking to a camera, then putting the video out on the internet and hoping that someone finds it interesting.

Ramiro's Narcissistic Blog Post
Here are two Youtube videos, one showing a very visible narcissistic quality while the another showing a lesser visible sign of narcissism. Please watch both videos first and then read my posts to make sense of my responses. For each video, I rate the level of narcissism from 4 the highest to 1 the lowest using a dollar sign.
1) Mi Vida Loca by FadedHolySoldier
www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHHpP8sFuIc&feature=fvw
The video falls in the type of a rant video where individuals speak out concerning events, dislikes, passions, and other topics from great cultural importance to personal expression.
The young man in the video has a central topic to voice (a chola movie) but is interrupted by his own thoughts and lack of structural dialogue. There is definitely no script or plot to the video but rather an emotional improvisation of ideas. He speaks of his past "chola" relationships, his purchased alcohol, the street and cars, and finishes with a comical exit. He has more of a personal agenda to make himself heard while at the same time to entertain his viewers.
Narcissistic: $ $ $ $
2) Atheist by Zachary Kroger
http://vimeo.com/11315339
This video is of a popular style when it comes to voicing controversial topics. These type of videos have txt, still photos, and music. All these elements create a sense of urgency, importance, and truthfulness. Here, the creator is never shown. There is not a person to point our finger and say "there she is, there's the narcissistic character". Yet the video still has a sense of a personal agenda. What contributes to the narcissistic nature of this video is its low credibility, and its weak arguments. The creator is definitely basing this video on a personal and weak opinions yet I believe the video does carry the creator's message in an effective manner.

Big Fish "Love of Your Life"
Hey guys!
So I was watching one of my all time favorite movies "Big Fish" this weekend and I thought I would just share a blog post about what I think is one of the best scenes in the movie.
Scene Shots
0:00-0:06-Series of Wide Shots
0:06-0:09-Medium Close Up
0:10-0:12-Very Wide Shot
0:12-0:16-Series of Medium Close Ups
0:17-0:20-Very Wide Shot (Freeze Frame)
0:20-1:00- Series of Wide Shots while the camera falls backwards through the setting of the scene.
This is my favorite part of the scene because Edward Bloom (The main character) is just walking through the scene while everything and everyone is frozen. It sort of has this really cool dream-like matrix effect to it and the moment seems magical and almost real.
The scene ends with some Medium Close Up Shots of Edward and Sandra Tempelton (The pretty blonde), Very Wide Shots and Wide Shots of the scene fast forwarding back to reality again.
This part where everything stops kind of makes the whole scene for me because it shows how life feels sometime when you just see that one person or experience that one thing and its like nothing else is going on and everything just stops or slows down as you just live through that moment.
Anyways if you haven't seen this film I highly recommend it!

Fantastic Mr. Fox
I chose fantastic Mr. Fox because the movie really comes to life because of the different types of shots that are used. I was unable to find a segment of the movie online so I included the movie trailer which demonstrates some of the shots that we talked about in class.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (Ishwar Gill)
The Life Aquatic: With Steve Zissou is by far my favorite movie. I love the character's Wes Anderson uses as well as his quirky film style. He tends to utilize slow motion pans and crabs, bright primary colors, and zoom ins in his films. I found that the scene where Steve Zissou's ship is attacked by pirates contained many shot types, even if they were for brief moments.
Additionally, I cant help but notice how the filter on the camera changes to one that is brighter and more saturated when Steve snaps and takes back his ship in his surreal and romanticized gun fight at 1:56.
0:16 - Wide shot
0:31 - Mid shot
0:48 - Medium close up
0:49 - Point-of-view (from pirates watching tv) as well as a Cutaway
1:17 and 2:00 - Cut-In
1:40 - Close up
1:56 - Extreme close up
2:35 - starts as very wide shot, zooms into wideshot
2:44 - Extreme wide shot of ship with Steve on it.
2:57 - Over the shoulder shot

Scarface Success (posted by Ramiro Trejo)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTrcfnJwF04
Scarface is an amazing movie and one element that makes the movie good are the camera shots.
The following are some shots that tie in with the in-class handout:
0:18 Scarface in a medium close shot
0:29 - 0:40 A Zoom Out which places Scarface in a smaller state compared to his
huge wealth behind him.
0:47- 0:55 A Cut In scene with two subjects only showing their hands
plus a moving zoom toward the bill counter.
When the music starts, many of the scenes include zoom with movement which, with no words,
does some of the talking.
1:31- 1:36 A Tilt movement showing the name "Montana Management" then showing the wealthy men walking out from the building.
2:26 - 2:35 Crab shot to the left
2:36 - 2:38 Wide shot of the wedding which gives the scene a more "family" atmosphere.
3:03 Over the Shoulder Shot concentrating on the woman's facial expression.
3:19 - 3:28 Following Pan leading the group.
