The Mold

The third video assignment dealt with trying to create a personal feel using a low-fi, home movie technique. Originally I had planned on "faking" a home movie concept, and I had about fifteen minutes of fictionalized film. but all of it felt too staged and I couldn't bring myself to use it.

The only part I decided to show was a candid film that developed from one of my staged ones. I had planned on pretending to get food out of the fridge, but I was a little surprised to see that there was mold in the food, got distracted and had to stop filming. I tried again to get food out of the fridge, but was once again distracted by the mold in the second dish and had a conversation with my roommate about it and the smell and forgot about the camera.

I cannot pinpoint exactly where the fiction turned into a reality, but I know that it occurs. The viewer does not get to see or smell the mold, but can gauge how bad it is based on our reaction and how we begin to empty the fridge, and it serves to place the viewer at something that actually occurred in my life.

  1. Mayhaps you could do another, similar piece in another soul-of-the-residence area? This is really awesome (more!more!more!) :)

Great work Nick. I love the camera's following nature. Your work kept me thinking "how did he do that?!". You really capture a cold feeling, and rather mechanical, to the piece. Probably experimenting with monitors would of served good as well which, as you know, Nauman used in the Public/ Private space installation. R.T
