CArol and Ferd

The Continuing Story of Carol and Ferd by Arthur Ginsberg and Video Free America. 1972-3.  There is a very short clip that is in this link  and the longer version is at the library under reserve for the class.

It is worth watching more of it - the story of them  is emblematic of the countercultural movement at that time. Also interesting to see them 5 years later (!) (the tapes were often shown with them present) and such is the case for the longer clip on reserve at the library.

INteresting to think about them in relation to the idea of narrative and telling personal story.

In this case they were under surveillance by a video crew for a period of a year - kind of a precursor to some of the shows that have become so popular (survivor?? etc.).

  1. Isn't it awkward to be in a situation like in Carol and Ferd? I feel like there were a lot of things that are really private about Carol and Ferd got recorded down and they will be available to the public forever! (at last a very long time). It will be so weird if Carol's students( she became the film professor, right?) and their parents (who might be conservative)to see the exact scene of their professor and her husband drugging themselves? I really appreciate their bravery.
BTW, Carol looks cool in the 5-years-later interview. Stylish. And Ferd is so such like one of my friend who's a music crit.

Great work Nick. I love the camera's following nature. Your work kept me thinking "how did he do that?!". You really capture a cold feeling, and rather mechanical, to the piece. Probably experimenting with monitors would of served good as well which, as you know, Nauman used in the Public/ Private space installation. R.T
