Bright Color Plastic Cows (posted by Ramiro Trejo)

I remember when I was around 10 years old back in Chicago my class and I went around downtown to see all the different kinds of sculpture cows that had become so famous. Personally, I was a fan of those cows, probably because I was a kid and a cow colored in bright patterns was always funny and interesting to me. Heres a clip from the show 60 Minutes with a critique on modern art concerning modern sculptures.

Done in Two Minutes! (posted by Ramiro Trejo)

Here is a clip from the movie "Art School Confidential", a 2006 film based on a comic book. The reason I chose this scene is because we, as Intro to Video students, have faced similar artistic questions within us and among our peers. Take a look.

I'm not proud of this...

While at home Friday Evening still recovering from the 2nd part of my Root Canal I decided to watch Hannah Montana: The Movie. Still high off the Vicodin the doctor had given me. I created this little diddy for my performance art piece. After watching maybe you'll understand why I'm not so proud of this.

Early vid artist response

Version I showed in class, not the later, more edited one. For Sheilah to Grade.

To Soothe A Frightened Girl /My Low-Fi Music

Here are some songs that I wrote. I usually videotaped the demo when I was writing the song, that's where a lot of those videos are from. And after a while I really started to make videos for the songs with my Sony T2 (Just a point-and-shoot camera which can do little video clips too).
They are really raw.

Some songs had appeared on the short film that I showed in class.
I just started to work on recording a not-too-low-fi version of each of the songs.
I will post the lyric later.

You can download my music here at Douban:
http://www.douban.com/artist/frightenedgirl/
And my videos are all on Youku:

I am thinking of a band if anyone's interested.

P.S. Dear Steph we should work on them together!

Love,
V

Personal Narrative - 1

This is interesting. This person conducted a different type of narrative about themselves. Rather than a narrative on their life, they conducted a narrative of their thoughts and medidations while reading a book.

Personal Narrative

I thought that this person's personal narrative was very unique. He used imagery rather than using something more traditional. The photos were obviously carefully selected and properly time with his narration.

The above link is a clip from Jackass called the night monkey. I was watching Jackass last night and I realized that they have pretty much became famous for performance art. But I thought this was the good example of performance art from them.

...So for some reason I am unable to post this but you can view it by going to youtube.com and typing in Jackass - Night Monkey.

The Mold

The third video assignment dealt with trying to create a personal feel using a low-fi, home movie technique. Originally I had planned on "faking" a home movie concept, and I had about fifteen minutes of fictionalized film. but all of it felt too staged and I couldn't bring myself to use it.

The only part I decided to show was a candid film that developed from one of my staged ones. I had planned on pretending to get food out of the fridge, but I was a little surprised to see that there was mold in the food, got distracted and had to stop filming. I tried again to get food out of the fridge, but was once again distracted by the mold in the second dish and had a conversation with my roommate about it and the smell and forgot about the camera.

I cannot pinpoint exactly where the fiction turned into a reality, but I know that it occurs. The viewer does not get to see or smell the mold, but can gauge how bad it is based on our reaction and how we begin to empty the fridge, and it serves to place the viewer at something that actually occurred in my life.

DU construction - Green Screen

Why one should avoid wearing a shirt with even the tiniest bit of green when embarking on a green screen adventure. But hey, at least now you all get a fun summary of the construction taking place at Denison from my floating head!

The Tracey Fragments trailer

Just some extreme editing that I found rather inspiring. The film took fourteen days to shoot, but ninety-something days to edit. Steph.

green screen

The quality of my green screen attempt is less than ideal in part because I tried to use the Nikon D5000 in an effort to shoot in HD. I wound up having to convert the footage from an Avi file to an Mov file and I think that is why the sound is a bit messed up. I hope you guys enjoy my first attempt.

CArol and Ferd

The Continuing Story of Carol and Ferd by Arthur Ginsberg and Video Free America. 1972-3.  There is a very short clip that is in this link  and the longer version is at the library under reserve for the class.

It is worth watching more of it - the story of them  is emblematic of the countercultural movement at that time. Also interesting to see them 5 years later (!) (the tapes were often shown with them present) and such is the case for the longer clip on reserve at the library.

INteresting to think about them in relation to the idea of narrative and telling personal story.

In this case they were under surveillance by a video crew for a period of a year - kind of a precursor to some of the shows that have become so popular (survivor?? etc.).

MinĂºsculo

A perfect example as to how narcissism can even be portrayed to the youth of the world.  Shown here is a children's French animated series titled "Miniscule" utilizing Narcissistic principles for an entire 5 minute clip.

Narcissism - Fred (Goes Swimming)

Hi everyone its Josh. This is a very short video about a kid named "Fred". This guy has created many videos like this one where he makes the pitch of his voice higher and talks about nothing...at all. He has actually become quite famous for these videos.

contextualized Partition

Here is another link if the embedded video does not work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlZ7mS9Fc40 . Response to Rock my Religion by Dan Graham.

Narcissism

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJFLfHI8jUI&feature=related
YouTube's tagline is Broadcast Yourself, and that is exactly what YouTube users do without scruple or shame.  YouTube provides the perfect breeding ground for narcissism because it provides a space where people can sneak a peek into the lives of others from around the world.  I chose this particular video because this is a video about a woman filming herself watching another YouTube user who is watching yet another user. This online hall of mirrors leads, eventually, to a woman in Wausua, Wis, called Nornna.  So this whole chain of people are watching themselves watch other people shows how intricate and complicated the web of narcissism is.

Video Diaries

The first video diary that I found was created by a group of college age guys who run a production company called wangfu. The video is around seven minutes long and they talk about going to chipotle and then subsequently about dating if it were more like chipotle. The producers assumption that this video would be interesting to an outsider and his placement of importance on the subject is inherently narcissistic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IcB0FYNCTA

The second video that I found was created by a guy that creates movies about things that have "scarred" him. For the entirety of the movie he talks about when he first started making out and how it scarred him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50zrGxHpUS8

I've come to the conclusion that video diaries and any type of video put up on youtube that the person spends the majority of the time talking about issues within his or her own life is narcissistic. I think that it is the presumption that what you have to say is important that makes it so narcissistic.

Charlemagne Palestine Responce

Narcissism (Sam)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnXk4r1YOzU&playnext=1&videos=sJDpVaGXT2g&feature=mfu_in_order

ok, i did what most of you guys probably did and typed in "narcissism" in to youtube. after surfing from video to video  i came across this guy. after watching the first video i watched of him (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6KBswUOrnQ&feature=related) i thought he was just poking fun at narcissism because he was addressing his narcissism so blatantly. but after watching his other videos, i realized that this guy was in fact very narcissistic. This guy is part of this youtube group called "project awesome." Yup. every video is just him talking of nothing in particular, just him talking to the camera about nothing. the filming itself is very narcissistic, but on top of that he has to edit these nonsensical videos. Some videos do not have dialog and even less of a structure. yes these videos are funny, but i definitely think his reasoning behind these videos has to do with his need of attention and self-reassurance.

So, she's not talking.

Narcissism Response by Vivian

Magibon

Margret Lilian Adams

She's Magibon, popular from two years ago. Blinking, staring at the camera, and in few clips she speaks simple Japanese word. And of course she looks cute.
People like her- she has qaint eyes and a baby face which is considered kawaii/moe (cute) in Japanese pop culture.
People hate her- nobody gets why she was doing those clips.
And they started guessing, where is she from? ect. This was such a myth.
Later the puzzle solved as Magibon revealed herself in a interview in Japan: She's a 22 year-old average American girl from Pennsylvania who loves Japanese culture. She's not talking because she is shy. (Many guesses there is something to do with her crooked teeth.)
But anyway, see how identity can easily constructed under the lens of camera.

Magibon makes me think of another myth. A lot of people have this question in minds: why do we look better when we are in the mirror. My guess is that you are actually manipulating your image in front of the mirror by :
1)adjusting the angle you see yourself
2)posing
3)correcting your pose according to the immediate feedback
when other's taking picture for you, #1's in control by the other; you can of course pose, but the feedback part's taken away. This is why people start to take pictures/ video themselves as how they see them in the mirror. Oops, not "they" but "we".

We all somehow love ourselves to some extent. Maybe not the appearance as what is in the case we talked about. There is nothing wrong.

Narcissism is sometimes too much to the people other than you. But I think it is better to love yourself than to hate yourself. It is not as painful after all.
