Vivian Installation

  1. Vivian I really liked the piece. I was a little confused on what your project was. In the end though I thought it was really nice. I liked the idea behind it a lot too, the presentation could be better though. Maybe showing your video in a little hallway or a small white room. The idea of meditation could have come across a lot better.
All in all it was a great presentation. I liked the mystery behind it a lot. Kept me guessing all the way through.

  2. Vivian, please show me your piece sometime - I'm really quite curious about it, now. Whatever it is, I like that you brought it into the dorms. It automatically makes the piece so much more intimate for an outsider.

  3. Bringing us into the dorm room, and forcing a kind of intimacy worked well. The offer of popcorn, the messiness of the room, the repeated image of the incense burning... it all made one a bit uncomfortable. Which is funny, since the piece is called 'meditation'. We think of meditation as something you do in a clean, pristine environment. Interesting to have that inverted.
The incense is interesting because it is all about the sense of smell, and that is denied by the image. Also the time lapse is missing, since it is a still image.
It is a garden of forking paths - read that story by Borges.

Great idea, could be further refined.

  4. I didn't get it at first either. I usually don't understand your pieces at first, but then when they're explained I love them. That's true for this project, too. You created an entire environment (or at least I assume you created it and don't have your room like that all the time). Great work!

  5. When I first entered your dorm room I was almost hit with sensory overload. The combination of the clutter, video projection, and intense smell of popcorn and Woodchuck hard cider was almost too much for me to handle. It was physically straining to be in the confined space. For me this piece was very much about waste. Wasting time as well as physical human waste. Sitting in the the chair with various debris around watching incense burning made me think about how much time we spend in our rooms, and how our lives are short and quick to burn out much like the incesne. I don't know if that is what you were going for but I that is what I got from it.

  6. Vivian I think that this was an interesting piece. I remember you mentioning meditation but I think with everything that you had in there was so distracting that it was very difficult to even think about meditating. I'm not sure if I know what you were illuding to but I would love to hear from you what you were going for with this though.

  7. Unfortunately, I didnt catch this piece because i was cleaning up my project. From what i gather, you transformed your room into an environment suited for meditation. I love this idea, you are always trying to get your audience involved in your work, I always enjoy your work. great job.

Great work Nick. I love the camera's following nature. Your work kept me thinking "how did he do that?!". You really capture a cold feeling, and rather mechanical, to the piece. Probably experimenting with monitors would of served good as well which, as you know, Nauman used in the Public/ Private space installation. R.T
