this was an interesting idea and very well executed. i know you went through some technical difficulties, but it turned out really well. It must have been tough to get the two videos to line up.
Yay - it worked!! Really interesting idea - two worlds. Reminded me of artist Douglas Gordon and how he uses his hands as characters. In this case the two spaces become interrelated characters. The idea of moving outside of the frame of the video is fun - also reminds me of the early video artists and how they challenged the frame and its relationship to the subject and the viewer. Sheilah
This idea of yours reminds me of Peter Campus' illusionary nature in his work...I saw the same in your work which captivated me. I found the space very appropriate and the arrangement of both powerpoint projections. The only area of progress I would point out is to make sure that the products you throw away from the top projection actually falls at the same direction and speed so to increase the reality of the illusion.
I could definitely tell you put a lot of work and planning into this, and it paid off. There's another artist who I've seen outside of class who did something similar (movement between two separate screens) but what I especially like about yours is the delay between the object leaving the upper screen and entering the lower. It gives a sense of space - whether literal in that there's a large drop we cannot see, or abstract in that maybe there's a resting place or obstacle we can't see. Great use of the technology. -Nick
This piece was fantastic. The visual play between the two videos was great. I definitely agree with you that it would have been better in a larger space but I don't think that the work was compromised by being shown in a smaller venue. Technically sound and inventive use of the medium. Good job.
Ian this was absolutely awesome. This was a very creative concept and to see you explore it was fun. I was hoping you were going to grab something that was WAY bigger than you and throw that down there. -Charles
Great work Nick. I love the camera's following nature. Your work kept me thinking "how did he do that?!". You really capture a cold feeling, and rather mechanical, to the piece. Probably experimenting with monitors would of served good as well which, as you know, Nauman used in the Public/ Private space installation. R.T
Glad you found a way to make this work :)
