I think just about any YouTube video could be deemed narcissistic because the central motivation for uploading is attracting attention to yourself. This could even be said for those who upload television episodes, they want the attention and "thank you"s. However these two examples are a little bit stronger and more obvious.
Davey Wavey is a YouTube video blogger who talks to his fans or "blog buddies" as he calls them about his life, gay issues, and things that interest him. As he's gained a following over the past few years, he's upgraded equipment and increased the amount of editing. He even made a music video and several workout videos. Here, he discusses his nudity and neighbors.
I suppose this could be categorized as a more artful form of YouTube narcissism. This group of men rose to mainstream fame with their parody of Katy Perry's California Gurls. Here they do they same with her song Peacock.
Nick,
ReplyDeleteAwesome finds on the youtube!
The idea of voyeurism and not wanting others to 'see' him is so interesting since he is the one allowing all of the youtube community to see him. I find it interesting when he says that he can't judge others as voyeuristic since he, himself, revels in voyeurism.
Do we post images of ourselves just so that we can prove we exist? To gain an audience?
re: Katie Perry - interesting choice since she is kind of a hot button topic in the gay community. I found the use of large amounts of white in the frame to be interesting aesthetically, as well.
SAW
Nick I love these videos. DaveWavey and RyanJamesYezak are some of my faves.
ReplyDeleteI think both videos are made to "shock" and get peoples attention which is definitely narcissistic in its on way. But I agree with what you say about YouTube, almost anything uploaded onto YouTube is pretty narcissistic in itself.
DaveyWavey I feel isn't like a lot of other people on YouTube trying to get famous from it. He is more like a self help guy. Anyways he seems to get the narcissism of YouTube and his videos sometimes bring that up. But it's not that big of a deal for him, thats not why he's here. However this one specific blog is very narcissistic.
Peacock: I know this video is kind of shocking. With the amount of sex, attitude and other things sort of being forced in your face it is hard to continue to watch for some people. But thats what I think also makes this video so great. If the video didn't fit the outlandish attitude of the song. I don't think it would be as exciting as it is. I don't think this video is as narcissistic as the vlog because their are many more people in it.
Anyways great choices love seeing something different out here on the blog!
